Capping a multi-day celebration, the Las Vegas Pride Parade is the centerpiece of the Las Vegas Gay Pride Festival, now in its twenty-third year. The parade, one of only three such nighttime processions in America, draws more than 10,000 locals and visitors to the downtown resort corridor, where they enjoy live music, colorful floats and appearances from alternative lifestyle luminaries such as Miss Gay America. The much-anticipated parade is considered the highlight of Pride festivities, which culminate the next day with the annual Pride Festival. Though the object is to have a great time, meet new friends and renew old friendships, Pride festivals originated with a 1970 march in New York City's Greenwich Village to mark the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, believed by many to be the birth of the modern gay rights movement. In keeping with that spirit, the Vegas Festival fosters debate on a variety of political and social issues at dozens of vendors and organization booths -- but it's OK if you're just there to dance. While some of the events during Pride week tend toward the R-rated, the main Festival welcomes guests of all ages.
